Mercedes-Benz is looking ahead to later in 2006 by announcing price structures for the forthcoming R-Class (pictured) and S-Class ranges, a series of AMG performance packs and a modest price rise for most of its other models.
The price rise averages out at around 1.4% and comes into force on April 1 (cars registered before that date will not be affected). It doesn't apply to the CL-Class coupé, nor to the two new ranges.
Of these, the first to appear will be the S-Class luxury saloon, which goes on sale on March 16. Driving impressions will follow soon, but for now we can confirm that the range will start with the 235bhp S 320 CDI turbo diesel saloon at £54,975. The 388bhp S 500 petrol is the largest of the three standard-wheelbase cars in the range and will cost £69,770.
There's also a series of long-wheelbase Limousines, starting with the S 320 CDI again at £58,795 and ending - for now - with the S 500 Limousine at £73,770. An S 600 Limousine, with the 517bhp 5.5-litre V12 engine, promises to be quite a machine, but
Mercedes has not yet revealed a UK price for it.
Prices for the R-Class (see launch report) start at £38,740 for the R 350, though the R 320 CDI costs just £5 more. Top of the range here is the long-wheelbase 306bhp R 500L Sport at £51,490.
The three AMG Performance Packs are available on the CLS 55, SL 55 and SLK 55 AMG models. In addition to the equipment already supplied on these cars, the Packs add tuning and styling items; in the case of the SLK that means uprated brakes, stiffer suspension and an increase in the electronically-controlled speed limit from 155mph to 174mph, plus styling cues and the leather/alcantara steering wheel from the F1 Safety Car.
That Pack costs £4800. The one for the CLS costs £7000 and includes 19" wheels, another speed limit increase (this time to 186mph), the same steering wheel as before, even larger brakes and a new multidisc limited-slip differential and reinforced final drive unit.
For £10,000, the SL Pack includes everything that's available for the CLS plus a new AMG front apron with larger air intakes and an extra oil cooler.
The COMAND (Cockpit Management and Display) and Audio 50 APS units fitted to
Mercedes-Benz models will benefit from the addition of RDS-TMC functionality, which uses information on traffic jams, road closures and other unfortunate occurrences to revise the route already chosen by the navigation system. This will be standard on the S-Class, and is being introduced this month to the CLS, SL, SLK and E-Class ranges. Other models will get the same upgrade later in the year.
