While browsing Inside Line the other night I ran across this article, but it totally slipped my mind until I saw our friends over at Autoblog just ran a story about it.

Peter Lyon of Inside Line recently took a hard-hitting look at the Yakuza, i.e. the Japanese mafia, to discover for himself the group's placement in Japanese car culture.

What do the Yakuza drive? Why do they drive it? Peter Lyon was determined to find out.

To begin his dangerous journey, Peter did the unthinkable... he sat down with a real Yakuza mob boss and asked questions "a Japanese scribe wouldn't dare ask in a million years."

In the first round of questioning, Peter played it safe, sticking to the obvious and asking why the Yakuza opted for the Mercedes S-Class. The replies "centered on Mercedes' strong build quality and high status levels."

Good answer Mr. Yakuza.

But Peter wasn't there to play it safe; it was time to take a walk on the wild side. In a move that could have ended his life right then and there, Lyon asked the question the entire world is dying to know:

"Why left-hand drive?"

The evil mob boss' response: "They don't come in right-hand drive."

Amazing. Peter Lyon has done it again ladies and gentlemen.

Walking into the den of lions, the belly of the beast, and laying to rest once and for all why the Yakuza prefer left-hand drive Mercedes.

I'm not a psychic, but for some reason the word Pulitzer keeps popping into my head.

Alright, so I might be exaggerating Peter's article slightly, but somebody needs to point out the fact his article borders on the ridiculous. The real reason for his article? Peter may have had a deep seeded desire to explore the Japanese underworld, but if I were to surmise a guess, it may have something to do with the fact that Inside Line is sponsored by a new movie called The Fast and the Furious 3: Tokyo Drift. If you've never heard of it, neither have I, but thanks to Peter's tie-in at the end of his story, I now know the entire plot line.

A kid named Shaun races the Yakuza's Drift King. Shaun loses and to repay his debts, is forced into the deadly world of the Yakuza. Will Shaun survive, or will the depraved Yakuza leader steal Shaun's soul?

Go see the movie this summer to find out.
