Renault has its eyes on the hot hatch segment currently occupied by the Golf GTi, Ford Focus ST and Opel's new Astra GTC.

A five-door version of the sporty Megane RS has been added to the local Renault line-up — and despite two extra doors and a facelift, costs R15 000 less than its predecessor.

With the Focus ST pushing out 166kW and the GTI 147 kW, the RS storms in with a 165kW mill, delivering that power at 5500rpm. Transmission is via a six-speed manual 'box.

Torque, meanwhile, is 300Nm at 3000rpm, allowing the Renault hatch to motor from 0-100km/h in 6.5 seconds, en route to a top speed of 236km/h.

But how does this performance match that of the RS's chief rivals? Pretty close if you look at the stats. While the GTi manual hits a top speed of 235km/h and does the 0 to 100 sprint in 7.2 seconds, the Astra GTC 2.0 Turbo has figures of 234km/h and 7.8 seconds respectively, according to the manufacturers. The Focus ST shows up with a top speed of 240km/h and a sprint time of 7,49 seconds.

The new RS features the new revised styling Renault recently gave all its Meganes: new tapered headlights, modified wheel designs, a narrower grille, translucent light clusters and restyled bumpers.

The sporty Megane also gets 17-inch wheels, sporty bumper front and rear, as well as dual exhaust pipes for a more aggro look.

The price? The new Megane RS will set you back R250 000, which is the same price as the Focus ST and 10 grand more than the GTi. The Astra GTC comes in at R232 920.
