VWSA has had to stop vehicle production at its Uitenhage plant as a result of the Numsa strike in the motor and component sectors.
The manufacturer on Thursday sent home about 4 000 of its production employees.
VWSA human resources director Brian Smith said the stike action at most of its supplier plants was having a dramatic impact on the local automobile manufacturing industry.
The continued strike threatens jobs and could jeopardise future exports. VWSA currently exports Golf and Polo hatchbacks to the Asia Pacific region.
Smith added that this strike, the second in the industry this month, and the delays surrounding the renewal of the MIDP would not help manufacturers secure the lucrative export contracts essential for ensuring the survival of the industry.
