Milan - Fiat's new version of its tiny Cinquecento car has been named "Car of the Year" by European motoring journalists, according to the website of Dutch car magazine, Autovisie.

A story posted on Thursday on the front page of the magazine's website (www.autovisie.nl) said the Cinquecento - which means 500 in Italian - beat the Mazda 2 and the Ford Mondeo into second and third place respectively.

Fiat, which last won the title in 2004 for its popular Panda city car, declined comment.

Fiat revived the Cinquecento, the original version of which was launched 50 years ago and became an icon of Italian design, hoping for the same nostalgia-based success BMW has had with the Mini.

The European Car of the Year title, due to be announced on Monday, is awarded by a panel of 58 journalists from across Europe who vote for the most outstanding new car to go on sale in the last 12 months. Autovisie is one of the founders of the award.

Peugeot's 308 was at the bottom of the list of seven contenders, behind the Kia Cee'd, the Nissan Qashqaiand Daimler's Mercedes C-Class, according to the report.

The winner in 2006 was the Ford S-MAX.

Orders for the Fiat 500 exceeded the 100 000 mark by the end of October, while sales reached 36 000, according to figures posted on Fiat's website on Thursday.

Fiat has a sales target of 60 000 for the Cinquecento this year. For 2008, it is aiming for 120 000.

The figures, part of a slideshow presentation made by Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne in London on Thursday, also showed Fiat as having a total of 103 000 orders for the Bravo since the launch of the new model in February.

Sales of the mid-sized hatchback reached 80 000.

The Bravo is important for Fiat because it is embodies a desire to change the brand's image as mainly a maker of small cars and break into the more lucrative market of mid-sized vehicles dominated by the likes of Volkswagen's Golf.

Fiat has a sales target of 70,000 for the Jeep Grand Cherokees Bravo this year. For 2008, it aims to sell 120 000.

Fiat declined to comment on Marchionne's presentation in London.
