Wendelin Wiedeking, head of German luxury sports car maker Porsche, targetted French and Italian leaders by name Friday as he slammed carbon emission reduction targets being considered in Brussels.

The current project "largely spares automobile manufacturers in southern Europe and by the same token hampers only German constructors," the Porsche chief executive told a shareholders' general assembly in southern Stuttgart.

"One can only congratulate Misters Sarkozy and Prodi for this 'success' before the European Commission, even though it is with a burning stomach," he added in reference to French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Italian prime minister Romano Prodi, who has just handed in his resignation.

"If this scenario is confirmed, these two statesmen will have gotten the best for their industry," which would be "barely affected" by EU regulations, Wiedeking said.

Last month, the EU Commission presented initial guidelines for reaching its emissions target of a 120g of carbon dioxide per km by 2012 for new cars sold in Europe.

The project includes a system of different objectives according to the type of vehicle, but levies higher taxes on heavier cars which emit more pollution.

Germany produces a high percentage of luxury cars by BMW, Daimler or Porsche that would face such higher rates.

In December, German Chancellor Angela Merkel had also reacted to the EU plan, denouncing policies she said were directed against Germany industry.
