Ferrari's new addition has a name - California - and first official images of the gorgeous beast have been released.

The latest addition joins Maranello's existing range of eight-cylinders and lines up alongside the flagship 612 Scaglietti.

Power is sourced from a 4.3-litre V8 with direct fuel injection and a "flat" crankshaft.

Producing 343 kW at an ear-splitting 7 500 r/min, this powerplant, via a seven-speed dual clutch transmission, propels the GT stunner to 100 km/h in under four seconds.

In a marque first, California's V8 lump is mounted in the mid-front position.

Against expectations, the new model will be available exclusively as a convertible with a folding hard top. However, Ferrari promises vehicle dynamics to satisfy even the most demanding driver.

The 2+2's comfort levels are said to be top-notch with the use of a new multi-link rear suspension.

California is also equipped with a revised version of the F1-Trac traction control system first debuted on the 599 GTB Fiorano and Brembo brakes with carbon-ceramic discs for near-flawless braking.

Ferrari's new GT will be officially unveiled at the Paris Motor Show, although the manufacturer has promised new photographs and more details in the run-up to the event.
