First shown as a concept car at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show, Toyota's iQ city car is just about ready for production, these spy shots reveal.
Pitted to go head-to-head against the original city car, the Smart ForTwo, iQ will take this concept one step further.
As opposed to the Smart's strictly two-occupant cabin, iQ has space for two and a half (the rear seat is probably just big enough for child-sized passengers, or two and luggage.
The cabin's spaciousness is the result of clever packaging, apparently using six space-saving, but interlinked engineering innovations, said to represent a revolution in Toyota's vehicle development.
Despite its small dimensions, Toyota insists the IQ will be extremely strong. Like the Smart ForTwo, it uses a safety cell to protect occupants in a crash.
iQ production kicks off in Japan later this year and the little car is also earmarked for developing countries.
