Ford Motor Company has sued the US government's Internal Revenue Service for $445.3 in interest on tax overpayments.

Ford, according to a Reuters report, posted losses totaling $2.7 billion last year. The manufacturer now alleges the IRS owes it money in interest on tax overpaymentsfrom 1983 to 1989, 1992 and 1994.

The lawsuit follows a long-running dispute between Ford and the IRS over how interest should be calculated for excess tax payments.

Ford is being caught in the general sales decline in the USwhere demand for its large pick-ups and SUVs have dropped off due to high fuel prices.

In response, the manufacturer is cutting jobs and shifting production towards smaller vehicles.
