BMW is slashing its production of large displacement engines in response to a global shift towards smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles.

According to Autoweek, the chairman of the manufacturer's works council Manfred Schoch said that "the eight-cylinder hasn’t been produced in a three-shift operation for a long time."

He added that the entire global demand for V8 engines could be produced in a one-shift operation over four days. Demand for V10 and V12 engines has also declined.

Furthermore, Schoch added that the assembly of six-cylinder units will be phased out at the Munich plant and replaced by four-cylinder assembly.

Schoch reportedly also said the works council was calling for the development of an electric vehicle based on the existing 1 Series.
