Joker pays homage to Nissan turbines
|
[12/27/2005] NEIGHBOURS who watched in shock as flames engulfed one of Nissan's giant windmills have got a new address thanks to a practical joker.

Tollerton Drive in Castletown – which sits in the shadow of the car plant's six turbines – has been renamed Windmill Close by a prankster who slapped a makeshift banner over the original street sign after the blaze.
Residents living in the street don't know who is behind the stunt, which comes complete with a rough sketch of one of the 200ft-high windmills.
Friday's fire was so fierce all three 75-ft long fibreglass blades dropped off the structure and neighbours told the Echo they could smell the acrid smoke as it drifted near their estate.
Lisa Beaumont, 38, was driving along the A1231 with her family on Friday afternoon when they spotted the flames destroying the top of the turbine.
Her five-year-old son Oliver was terrified by the sight and thought the blaze would reach the family's home at the end of the street.
She said: "We were taking the children to see Santa Claus when we saw that one of the windmills was on fire.
"My little boy Oliver was terrified. He put his hands over his eyes and said 'Will it come to our house?'. He was petrified that it was going to spread but I reassured him that it wouldn't."
Mum-of-two Lisa said some residents had been against the £2.3million wind farm when it was built in August but, despite last week's fire, she had no problems with it.
She added: "The windmills don't bother me as I can't really see them from my house so they're not an eyesore.
"I can see one from my bedroom window but maybe it would be a different matter if my house looked over them."
Mortgage adviser Julie Telfer, 36, whose house does overlook the turbines, said: "I don't like them at all and when they were built I was worried that the house prices would be affected.
"To be honest, I wish they would all set on fire. I've even heard some people saying they can't walk their dogs near them because they get frightened.
"Whoever has put the sign up has just done it as a bit of fun though."
The turbine – bought second-hand from Germany – burst into flames at about 12.30pm on Friday, when engineers were testing it after an oil leak.
The blaze prompted police to close the A19 and A1231 for more than an hour.
Almost 200 members of the public dialled 999 to alert emergency crews to the fire, which sent thick black smoke billowing across the city.
The wind farm has been closed until experts discover the exact cause of the blaze.
A spokesman for Nissan denied the turbines are unsafe. He said the design is used in wind farms all over the world and, as far as they were aware, nothing like that had happened before.
