TOKYO - Major Japanese automakers are expanding the lineups of small cars for the U.S. market to capitalize on the growing popularity of fuel-efficient vehicles amid high gasoline prices, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported Saturday.
Toyota Motor Corp. plans to start exporting the Yaris subcompact to the United States as early as next spring from Japan and elsewhere. With engine displacements ranging between 1 and 1.5 liters, depending on the
model, this car, which is sold as the Vitz in Japan, is smaller than the 1.8-liter Corolla, the carmaker's mainstay subcompact in the United States, the report said.
Toyota also plans to roll out the Belta small sedan, which features 1- to 1.3-liter engines, in the spring or later in North America, the report said, adding the company has not revealed sales targets for these cars.
