WHEN you look at the competition in the supermini sector, you've got to admit there are some pretty serious players.
But with prices ranging from just under the £7000 mark for an entry-level Daihatsu Sirion to a mind-boggling £17,195 for a top-of-the-range Smart Forfour, you certainly pays your money and takes your chances, as the saying goes.
Towards the bottom end of the price banding sits the Chevrolet Kalos, which starts at a reasonable £7095 in three-door, 1.2-litre guise. Even its more powerful 1.4-litre siblings can all be put on the road for less than £10,000, making the whole five-model range very affordable to those looking for a new car at a budget price.
The five-door, 1.4-litre, 16-valve Kalos SX hatchback is a hard act to beat with its £8795 price tag, which includes three years' free servicing in the cost.
Not only is it cheap to put on the driveway, but with fuel economy around the 40mpg mark and insurance rated as group five, running costs will also be kept to a minimum. As one of the tallest cars in its sector, the Kalos makes full use of its cabin space with more than enough room for four adults to travel in comfort.
The seats also offer a decent level of support to cope with those longer journeys, and there can be no complaints about the quality of plastics and fabrics.
