New Delhi: Detroit-based General Motors will roll out three Chevrolet models in India in 2006. This is part of the company's plan to roll out five new models in the Indian market in the next two years and a regional rollout plan of 29 vehicles in Asia Pacific in 2006.

Even as Toyota, Honda and Hyundai make significant inroads into its home base of North America, General Motors has registered record sales of 1.06 million in Asia-Pacific, up 20 per cent from 2004 volumes.

Sales in Thailand and India were likewise buoyed by the growth in Chevrolet, which has become the fastest-growing vehicle nameplate in the Asean region and one of the fastest growing in India.

The Chevrolet brand has done well for the company in India as it closed 2005 with sales of 30,837 cars, up 18 per cent over the 26,166 vehicles sold the previous year. During this period, sales of the Chevrolet Tavera more than doubled to 18,622 units. |Read more Finance news.|

In response to growing demand in India, the capacity of GM's manufacturing facility in Halol was expanded to 60,000 vehicles per year in 2005.

A second expansion that is expected to be completed by April 2006 will increase the plant's capacity to 80,000 vehicles per year. GM is looking to corner 10 per cent of India's car market by 2010.
